Bazaruto Island
Bazaruto is one of the four islands belonging to the Bazaruto Archipelago. The warm, southward-flowing Mozambique Current appears to be contributing to the increased accumulation of sand along the shore. Because the water along this stretch of coast is so clear, much of the island's subsurface channel pattern may be seen. On the satellite image below, many small streaks of plankton bloom parallel the coast. The Bazaruto Archipelago is home to the largest population of dugongs in Mozambique (approximately 300 animals) and is probably certainly the last viable population of dugongs remaining off the coast of East Africa. Numerous lakes and a swampy environment, which appears to be karst topography, may be seen on the coastal plains. The limestone rock that underpins the area has deteriorated into a pockmarked landscape, resulting in water-filled sinkholes.
This island is noted for its natural beauty and immensely diverse ecosystems, which you can explore and enjoy. Bazaruto is worth the trip because of its tropical climate and beautiful surroundings!
