Vilanculos Island

Vilanculos Island the water sports capital of Mozambique. It's a popular beach resort location with lodging ranging from budget to five-star barefoot luxury. March to November is the dry season, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 23 degrees.

The lovely beaches around Vilanculos' coastline are ideal for horseback riding and guided treks, or guests can board a dhow (local sailing boat) for a cruise through the crystal clear waters while lunch is made on board. In the Bazaruto National Park, diving and snorkeling excursions are a necessity to witness a variety of marine wildlife such as manta rays, whale sharks, turtles, and in season, humpback whales. This is one of the few places in the world where the endangered Dugong can be found. In pure water, visibility can extend as far as 40 meters.

From October to February, deep sea fishing, particularly for Black Marlin, is a popular activity in the waters surrounding this Mozambique marine park. Visitors can also try their hand at salt-water fly fishing or catch a variety of tuna species in this location.

With a 4x4 vehicle, visitors to Vilanculos can travel inland to the Zinave National Park, which is part of Mozambique's Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area. This park is undeveloped and features a variety of habitats, including miombo forest, riverine vegetation, open bush, and even lagoons. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas are among the creatures that live here.
