BBC Learning English
This is a BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) website. It's similar to VOA, but with a British emphasis. The BBC, like the VOA, maintains a news site geared toward native speakers. But it is also excellent for students. This English learner's site is cleaner and easier to navigate than the VOA site, while having less content. There are various levels of classes available. There are other programs on culture, language, current events, and English. Another nice feature is that you may obtain PDF transcripts or audio recordings from most articles and blogs.
It has received multiple honors, including two British Council Eltons and an English-Speaking Union award for innovation in English language education. The department was founded in 1943. Since then, it has changed titles numerous times, appearing as "English by Radio" (or ExR), "English by Radio and Television" and "BBC English", until arriving at "BBC Learning English". In 1945, the BBC World Service began transmitting English language education programs for beginners, intermediate, and advanced learners, both adults and children. Pop Words was one of several shows that used song lyrics to teach language comprehension. In the 1950s, it was common for big broadcasters to have a program that taught the language of the country that the broadcaster served.
There are some certain aspects for you to try in this wonderful website:
- Listening: Because the site specializes in various audio and video records, it's simple to locate ways to practice listening.
- Current events: The "Words in the News" section contains brief videos about current events. It is not always possible to find news from the same day. If you want the most up-to-date information, go to the main BBC news website.
- Pronunciation: There is a section of the website dedicated to English pronunciation and sounds. To be clear, the entire site (including this section) is written in British English. If you're studying American English, there may be some minor variances, particularly in vowel pronunciation.
