Pura Besakih, the spiritual center for the Balinese people, is made up of a number of many temples and is situated in a breathtaking setting on the southern slopes of Mount Agung, at a height of 1,000 meters. Largest is Pura Penataran Agung. This temple complex is surrounded by lush rice terraces and woodlands, and numerous important festivals are held here; if you're lucky, you'll get to see one while you're there. Visiting the temples takes roughly three hours, so you'll need to walk for quite a distance and climb many steps, so it's a good idea to wear comfortable walking shoes.
