Black Lake

The largest lake in Saint Lawrence County, New York, Black Lake is located in the north of the state. The lake runs miles in tandem with the Saint Lawrence River to its south. Black Lake was created by the melting of continental glaciation in the state some 12,000 years ago, giving it a glacial origin.

The Indian River is the main source of water into the lake, but there are other sources as well. The Oswegatchie River and the Saint Lawrence River are where the lake empties. Ogdensburg, New York, is located south of the lake's northeastern end.

Large bays, vast weed beds, island drop-offs, Midlake shoals, rocky points, and rocky shorelines make up Black Lake's top fish habitat. The largest of the Indian River lakes, Black Lake has a shoreline that stretches for more than 60 miles. Black Lake is one of the few lakes in New York State that can promise year-round ample crappie fishing, and bass and crappie fishing are both quite popular there. Black Lake is one of the top freshwater lakes in New York State for year-round fishing, according to anglers from all over the world. Perch, crappie, bass, and bluegill are known to thrive in this calm inlet, which is only a few minutes from the St. Lawrence River's edge.
