Brutalist Websites

The raw middle finger raised to UX that Brutalism represents can be a bit of a breath of fresh air in a design world dominated by websites that seek, above all else, to acquire new users and make more money.

Brutalist
websites tend to lack sophisticated interactions, well-positioned typography, and aesthetically pleasing grids. Instead, you'll notice intentionally skewed grids, gargantuan headlines, cursor-based effects that are more meant to destroy than guide you around a page, and scroll effects that are more of an attack on the senses than anything else.

Collectively, these sites provide a fascinating peek into what the internet may look like if artists were freed from the constraints of conversions. Not only is brutalism an interesting take on the concept, but it's also strangely appealing.

  • Truly artistic inspiration: Most content online is not an outlet for individuality. Instead, the focus should be on expanding the number of people who engage with the content. It's all about commercials, pop-ups, and sponsored content taking over. Brutalism, on the other hand, is tearing down restrictions on what architects and designers can and can't achieve. In favor of aesthetics and effects that are jarring and, at times, offensive (to expectations, at least), the works developed here ignore optimization guidelines and best practice lists. Brutalist websites may appeal to you if you enjoy seeing designers let their imaginations run wild without worrying about earning a profit.
  • Straight-up fun design inspiration: The "unpolished" style of Brutalist websites can be strangely captivating. It's easy to get lost in the sites it curates, such as the 90s Myspace-inspired NO, SHE DOESN'T LABEL or the genuinely good Internet Warriors, which doesn't even try to keep up with design trends. If you're looking for a shock, visit brutalist websites. One of these revelations is the surprising similarity between brutalist websites and the unoptimized areas of the web.
