Carl Fredericksen (Up)

Carl Fredericksen is the main character in the film Up. He's a sad older guy who lost his wife Ellie, with whom he shared the ambition of going to Paradise Falls. Carl is a particularly unpleasant man at the start of the film, but it is clear that his hard exterior is a mechanism for him to escape his own emotions.

People can easily empathize with his loss because his marriage story is one of Pixar's most emotional narratives. This, along with his change of heart towards Russell and even Dug the dog, softens the heart of anybody. Carl still had the adventure of a lifetime waiting for him, even after he believed he'd seen it all and had nothing else to live for.
