Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
Ron Woodroof, an electrician in mid-'80s Texas, discovers he has AIDS. Despite being told he only had 30 days to live, Woodroof refuses to succumb to despair. He pursues alternative cures and smuggles authorized pharmaceuticals into the United States from wherever he may get them. Woodroof teams up with another AIDS sufferer to market the medicines to the rising number of individuals who can't wait for the medical establishment to save them.
Dallas Buyers Club debuted at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and was distributed theatrically in the United States by Focus Features on November 1, 2013, before going wide on November 22. Despite a $5 million budget, the picture made more than $52 million worldwide. The picture gained significant critical praise, earning a slew of awards. Most complimented McConaughey and Leto's performances, which earned them the Academy Oscars for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, at the 86th Academy Awards, making this the first picture since Mystic River (2003), and only the fifth film in history, to win both awards.
