Roma (2018)
Alfonso Cuarón wrote and directed the 2018 drama film Roma, which he also produced, filmed, and co-edited. Set in 1970 and 1971, Roma chronicles the lives of a live-in Mixteco maid for a middle-class family as a semi-autobiographical look at Cuarón's childhood in Mexico City's Colonia Roma area. Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira play the key roles in the film. It is a joint multinational production of Mexico and the United States.
'Roma,' Alfonso Cuaron's black-and-white classic, depicts the physical and mental agony of Cleo, a domestic servant from Mexico City's middle-class district of Roma. In a direct-from-the-heart tone, the film depicts severe societal events and their imprints on people's psyches. Cuaron draws on his own childhood memories and experiences to paint a realistic portrait of women who sacrifice their aspirations and interests to raise a generation. 'Roma' is a moving homage to the women who battled sadness and hopelessness as a result of poverty and patriarchal norms prevalent in Mexican urban culture during the tumultuous 1970s.
