Dark Souls
FromSoftware created the Dark Souls series of action role-playing games. The series' high level of difficulty has been both praised and criticized. The games are set in a dark, medieval fantasy world where the player's character battles knights, dragons, phantoms, demons, and other monstrous or supernatural entities. The accumulation, loss, and recovery of souls are central to the Souls games' narrative and gameplay. Another recurring theme is the demise of a once powerful and prosperous kingdom: for example, in the setting of Demon's Souls, Boletaria, in which the player attempts to stop the spread of a demon-infested fog that threatens to consume the world.
The Dark Souls trilogy's plot differs in that it revolves around the player's attempts, through various means, to either reverse or perpetuate the spread of a curse of undeath known as the "Darksign", which prevents true death but causes the undead's gradual descent into madness and decay known as "Hollowing", based on the player's decisions. These games are linked by their setting and an overarching cyclic narrative centered on fire, and they are linked to their predecessor Demon's Souls by shared themes and elements, such as interactions with phantoms and battles with demons. At the end of each game, characters can either reignite the "first flame" or let it fade, reiterating a decision made by others before them, which becomes a plot point in and of itself.
