Dr. José Matías Delgado University
Dr. José Matías Delgado University is an El Salvadorian private university in Antiguo Cuscatlán, La Libertad. It is one of the country's earliest private higher education institutions, having opened on September 15, 1977.
La Matas was founded as a nonprofit institution by Salvadoran intellectuals, academics, and businessmen in honor of Salvadoran priests, lawyers, politicians, and national hero José Matias Delgado. Its main goal was to form professionals capable of improving and directing the business and judicial institutions of the time. Its mission has been to protect and strengthen free-market principles since its inception in 1977. By 1978, the university had three faculties: the "Dr. Isidro Menéndez" Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, the "Dr. Santiago I. Barberena" Faculty of Economics, and the "Francisco Gavidia" Faculty of General Culture and Fine Arts.
Each school features a library with a wide collection of digital and physical resources, including bibliographic accounts from the nineteenth century. There are also technical workshops, sports areas, computing facilities, medical clinics with psychiatric support, and laboratories for chemistry, physics, medicine, and agricultural research, among other things.
