José Simeón Cañas Central American University
José Simeón Caas Central American University, usually known as UCA El Salvador, is a private, nonprofit university sponsored by the Society of Jesus in San Salvador, El Salvador. It was established on September 15, 1965, at the request of a group of Roman Catholic families who petitioned the Salvadoran government and the Society of Jesus to establish another university as an alternative to the University of El Salvador, becoming the country's first private university. In Nicaragua, the Jesuits manage Central American University (UCA Managua), which was founded in 1960.
Since then, UCA has grown to become one of Central America's greatest higher education institutions. Despite the university's stated goal of playing a pivotal role in the change of Salvadoran society, this is the case. As a result of this focus in the Salvadoran setting, the institution has prioritized undergraduate degrees, social science research, and public dissemination of research findings in local peer-reviewed journals.
Antiguo Cuscatlán is the location of the university. There are 33 buildings on the university's 38-acre campus, as well as a professional soccer field, basketball and volleyball courts, three auditoriums, and four cafeterias. A minimarket, a museum, three clinics, a book shop, a main library, many smaller thematic libraries, and a documentation center are all on the campus.
