Earlscourt Park

Earlscourt Park - situated on the corner of St. Clair West - has a beautiful grass soccer field complete with bleachers. To the south of that area is a less attractive - but perfectly functioning - grass field, encircled by a cement track and a shooting range. Generally speaking, there is plenty of grassy space for casual soccer, even though some of it is not exactly within the designated areas for the sport. On the ground where the soccer fields now stand, there used to be a large guarded baseball stadium. Ever since the opening of the park, male and female teams have played softball and baseball here, which is now situated behind the community hall.

Soccer has a long and illustrious history at Earlscourt park. Today, an outdoor field with a well-lit artificial surface is utilized by athletes of all ages. Not many people know that the game was originally played on multi-purpose grounds.

Soccer matches in Earlscourt Park were notoriously physical, and brawls between players and supporters were not uncommon. By the mid-1960s, teams competing in the park represented a diverse range of nations, and confrontations continued to erupt. It was reported in 1952 that the city was considering building bleachers for soccer supporters, in an attempt to prevent fights at Earlscourt matches.
