Varsity Stadium
Varsity Stadium is a college outdoor football stadium in Toronto, On, Canada. Football has long been a significant element of the University of Toronto sports program, with the Varsity Blues winning the Yates, Gray, and Vanier Cups in their first seasons.
The football Blues have long regarded the intersection of Bloor and Devonshire as their home. Prior to 1899, Blues games took place in the Circle at King's College. The sometimes boisterous games generated widespread criticism, and the Blues then had to be relocated. It moved less than 400 feet southward of the Bloor on Devonshire. On October 22, 1898, this location hosted its debut game versus Queen's. In 1900, the very first cinder track was built, along with a $400 grandstand seating 400-500 spectators. This grandstand remained until 1950, when it was renovated.
The University of Toronto determined in 1911 that it was time to build a permanent stadium for its football team, the Blues. As a consequence, the 7,200-seat Varsity Stadium was erected on the south-east junction of Bloor and Devonshire, just across the existing Stadium. The structure was mostly constructed of wood, with a sheltered part on the west side seating 3,160 people, and an open auditorium on the eastern edge with an upper deck and space for 3,500 people in five sections.
