El Calafate (Perito Moreno Glacier)
El Calafate is a city in Argentina's Santa Cruz Province, near the Chilean border, in the centre of Patagonia's vast and untamed scenery. It gets its name from the many tiny shrubs that thrive in the area and produce yellow flowers and Calafate-like fruits. The Perito Moreno Glacier, however, is the city's principal attraction and the reason for its prominence as a tourist destination.
The Perito Moreno Glacier is roughly 50 miles from the city, and because of its natural splendor, it is one of Argentina's must-see destinations. Apart from viewing the glacier, there are plenty of other things to do in Calafate, such as fishing, horseback riding, spending the day at a hacienda, or visiting other local attractions like the La Leona Petrified Forest and the Walichu Caves.
