Experience Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine
The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, which was a tiny, family-run coal mine and camp from around 1890 to 1910 and later a commercial enterprise until it closed in 1953, is now a well-known tourist destination in West Virginia. Experienced miners who offer guided tours in authentic "man trips," the cars used in mining operations, say both children and adults love seeing the former coal mines.
Explore the Coal Camp after emerging from the tunnels, where restored original structures like the Pemberton Coal Camp Church and the Helen Coal Camp School can be found. Next, head to the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia, where a late 19th-century homestead replica and a planetarium are located. The tour, entry to the camp, and museum are all included in the $22 adult and $12.50 youth admission. From April to November, the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine is accessible, but no matter when you go, pack a light jacket because the mines can get chilly.
