Getaway
There's no better alternative than Getaway if you need a break from your frantic daily routine. Getaway's aim is to provide people with "the time, space, and permission to be off." Their fourteen Outpost locations—mostly on the East Coast, with a handful on the Gulf of Mexico and two on the West Coast—are made up of minimalist cabins that range in size from 140 to 200 square feet and can sleep two to four people. These hotels' mini-kitchens only include the minimal essentials, but you can increase your supply with a $30 Sustenance Box, which offers nonperishable meal and snack alternatives. Other camping necessities, such as bug wipes and wood bundles, can be purchased as well.
A fireplace, grill grate, and picnic table are included in each cabin. The neighbors are close enough to view but far enough away to enjoy their own outdoor area. Check-in begins at 3 p.m., with a customized admission code delivered to your phone, so you may not see another person for the duration of your journey. Cell phone coverage may be poor or absent as a trade-off spending some time in the great outdoors. There is, however, a landline available for emergencies and contacting the Getaway team. There's also no Wi-Fi (and, according to their FAQ, "never will be"), so be sure to download those Spotify playlists ahead of time.
Best feature: If you're searching for an off-the-grid getaway but don't want to leave the city, this is the place to go.
