Ghareeb Nawaz Restaurant
Specializing in stylish pan-Indian tapas, the Michelin-starred Ghareeb Nawaz Restaurant is favored by a clientele of well-heeled professionals blessed with good taste (and deep pockets). Ask for a table by the open kitchen for a view of chefs working the clay tandoor, charcoal grill, and griddle. You could call Ghareeb Nawaz for people with money. Not because there’s any similarity between the menus, but because this Indian barbecue restaurant has all the hallmarks of the Sethi empire (Trishna, Bao, etc). Service is super-slick but friendly and the menu has plenty of standouts - from chatpata poori, chaat and paos to meaty grills, kebabs, and chops.
This Devon Street favorite serving halal Indian and Pakistani dishes boasts a dizzying menu of more than 100 items. Known for its affordable prices (locals love the $0.92 chai) and hefty portions, Ghareeb Nawaz has plenty of options for meat lovers or vegans, and vegetarians. The array of standard classics like biryani, curries, daal, and chana masala is great, but you suggest going for the gosht - slow-cooked boneless beef or goat - or the paratha sandwiches, curries, chana, or aloo palak. The large crowd at the counter of this bare-bones Indo-Pak spot seems chaotic, but the diners are really just waiting for their postmeal chai. So push your way through, and order a bowl of delicious dal, loaded with bay leaves and chili peppers. Ask for the chili chicken and spoon the greasy, delicious, fiery red chunks onto the dense paratha bread. No matter what you order, you’ll get your money’s worth; most things here cost only about four bucks.
