The words “late night” don’t carry quite as much heft as they used to, even two years after the onset of the pandemic. A number of establishments that ... read more...

  1. Smoque BBQ is a neighborhood kind of place that cooks up BBQs well enough to make it a true destination. This restaurant will offer more than beef. Lamb, duck, and pork will also be served. Not everything is smoked over oak, Sorkin mentions a shrimp scampi. Sides include scalloped potatoes, glazed carrots, and there will be mushrooms. They’re covering all the steakhouse classics. Barbecue crisscrosses cultures like grill marks on a marbled rib-eye steak. People in all corners of the world have harnessed flames to cook food—slow-roasted pig in banana leaf-lined pits, skewered meat caramelized over hot coals. It is an ancient craft, after all, with simple instructions: fire plus meat equals mealtime. With credit due to many storied foundations of barbecue—through indigenous peoples, immigrants, and enslaved people—today’s smoked meats are, in some parts, tried-and-true traditions and, in others, contemporary approaches.

One of the benefits of sous vide is cooks don’t need a pricey dry-aged cut of meat for great results. Hanger cuts come out as tender as filet mignon. Though Smoque BBQ will source wagyu and prime cuts, they’ll offer less costly pieces of meat, too. This will allow customers, the ones without a corporate expense account, to afford to visit more than once a week. Neighborhood steakhouses need something to attract customers other than hulking pieces of meat. In Ukrainian Village, Boefhaus relies on great service and a wonderful wine list. Another Avondale steakhouse, Mirabella Italian Cuisine, depends on a chef who worked for years at Gene & Georgetti. The restaurant offers full service, but patrons with an order on their phones use QR codes to pull up menus. Servers will still be on hand to explain the menu and wine list, but Sorkin says QR codes, something that was born to limit contact during the height of the pandemic, are here to stay at restaurants.

  3. Cheesie's Pub & Grub Lakeview is one of the best late-night delivery restaurants in Chicago. Made popular in the USA, Mac, and cheese is now a staple in households across the world. Pillow-like elbow pasta, mixed with various cheeses is hard to dislike. Although most of you have likely tried Mac and cheese, you will find there is quite a variance between versions. Everyone has their favorite but baked Mac and cheese are hard to beat. Both creamy and cheesy with a crunchy top, this is perhaps the ultimate indulgence. Add extra cheese to the crunchy top and it makes it arguably the best Mac and cheese in the world.

Fondue is the national dish of Switzerland and for good reason. This dish contains a luxury assortment of melted alpine cheeses such as Gruyere and Emmental, white wine, garlic, and sometimes Kirsch for an added kick! These are mixed in a pot to create a thick, cheesy, and hot mixture of goodness for dipping. Typically, this is eaten communally with guests dipping rustic bread in it. As is the tradition in many parts, it is important not to drop your bread in the pot! If a man is to drop his bread in the pot, he must buy a round of drinks. If it is a woman, then she must kiss the nearest person.

  5. Lawrence's Fish & Shrimp is sophisticated, yet light and airy, subtly nautical look reflects both its picturesque location right on the Potomac River and the vibrant cast of its menu - which bursts with all the Crudo, caviar, and delicacies like Spanish crawfish and razor clams you could hope for before branching out in the most thoughtful yet sensual of directions. Giant tiger prawns grace bucatini pungent with smoked sea urchin and Calabrian chiles while elusive Norwegian skrei gains punch from chickpea cream, squid ink, and a dusting of the bottarga. Of course both bar and cellar brim like pirate’s chests with treasures. But the leisurely brunch service lures locals here as much as do the elaborate dinners—and so do the bomboloni come dessert.

This pearl of the Georgetown waterfront comes from Fabio Trabocchi, the same deft chef behind Fiola and Casa Luca. Lawrence's Fish & Shrimp is hard to focus on your meal with welcome distractions like docking boats or glistening chandeliers in the opulent dining room (maritime kitsch need not apply). But dishes like olive oil-poached Maine halibut and a whole dole-carved tableside hold your attention. For the full rigmarole, order a seafood tower that puts Pisa to shame. The stack is brimming with cooked and raw shellfish, bivalves, and more served chilled atop crushed ice. This is definitely the place for a special occasion—with a price tag to match.

A New York City-based cookie chain is planning its third Boston-area location: Insomnia Cookies will open at 61 Bromfield St. in Boston’s Downtown Crossing. The company — which is especially known for its late-night cookie delivery service — already operates local shops in Harvard Square and on Commonwealth Avenue near the Boston University campus. The Cambridge location opened in late 2012, followed by the Boston location the next year. The restaurant was founded in a dorm room in 2003 by University of Pennsylvania student Seth Berkowitz. The company opened its first shop in Syracuse, NY, and quickly expanded to include food trucks. Just over a decade after its founding, Insomnia Cookies opened its 50th shop; two years after that, Insomnia Cookies opened its 100th shop. The menu includes a variety of cookie flavors, as well as cookie cakes, brownies, ice cream, and “wiches” (ice cream sandwiched between two cookies).

  7. If you haven’t seen the news (and more news) that Buffalo, and the surrounding region, are undergoing something of a culinary renaissance, then you need to take another look. From casual to fine dining, American to ethnic, there’s been an absolute explosion of new restaurants. One of the most notable microcosms of this food revival can be seen in the recent wave of new taquerias and Mexican restaurants that have opened their door.

Taco Burrito King is not uncommon to see groups of intoxicated college students at locations of this well-known local chain, but their enthusiasm for Taco Burrito King isn’t misplaced. The menu of Mexican-American dishes like fajitas, tacos, quesadillas, soups, and tamales is satisfying at any time of day—and especially in the early hours of the morning. If you have an especially big appetite, go ahead and order the Super King Burrito, a 13.5-inch flour tortilla packed with your choice of meat, beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. Taco Burrito King or simply T.B.K. is great for long study nights during finals or even if you’re looking for a great meal late at night. Reasonably priced but at the same time delicious. The Horchata and veggie King Burrito are awesome! Great burritos and great service. I got a steak burrito and it was huge, the most amount of meat I’ve ever had in a burrito! The place was clean and the workers were really friendly. A must-visit for great Mexican food.

  8. Specializing in stylish pan-Indian tapas, the Michelin-starred Ghareeb Nawaz Restaurant is favored by a clientele of well-heeled professionals blessed with good taste (and deep pockets). Ask for a table by the open kitchen for a view of chefs working the clay tandoor, charcoal grill, and griddle. You could call Ghareeb Nawaz for people with money. Not because there’s any similarity between the menus, but because this Indian barbecue restaurant has all the hallmarks of the Sethi empire (Trishna, Bao, etc). Service is super-slick but friendly and the menu has plenty of standouts - from chatpata poori, chaat and paos to meaty grills, kebabs, and chops.

This Devon Street favorite serving halal Indian and Pakistani dishes boasts a dizzying menu of more than 100 items. Known for its affordable prices (locals love the $0.92 chai) and hefty portions, Ghareeb Nawaz has plenty of options for meat lovers or vegans, and vegetarians. The array of standard classics like biryani, curries, daal, and chana masala is great, but you suggest going for the gosht - slow-cooked boneless beef or goat - or the paratha sandwiches, curries, chana, or aloo palak. The large crowd at the counter of this bare-bones Indo-Pak spot seems chaotic, but the diners are really just waiting for their postmeal chai. So push your way through, and order a bowl of delicious dal, loaded with bay leaves and chili peppers. Ask for the chili chicken and spoon the greasy, delicious, fiery red chunks onto the dense paratha bread. No matter what you order, you’ll get your money’s worth; most things here cost only about four bucks.

Along with sushi, they also serve a variety of other Japanese dishes. Some of the menu items include things like venison tataki, bluefin maguro, and non-sushi dishes like a variety of items made with Japanese Wagyu beef. The restaurant also has a location in New York, but visitors considering going should keep in mind that the acclaimed restaurant can be on the pricey side.

For fans of Japanese cuisine who only want the best and are looking for a tasty but unique experience, Diva Thai & Sushi Bar fits the bill for a high price. Whether you're a major foodie, a lover of documentaries, or just a casual Netflix watcher, you've likely already heard of Sukiyabashi Jiro. Diva Thai & Sushi Bar's food ingredients are ethically sourced, meaning that Sushi Bar is an entirely sustainable sushi restaurant. Along with being eco-friendly, the rolls and nigiri at Bamboo Sushi are known for being totally delicious. Along with their unique take on sushi and Japanese food, they have a vegan menu and a vast drinks menu for people to enjoy with their meals. The restaurant's interior is really colorful and bright and will make you feel like you've taken a trip from Chicago to another world as you enjoy this unique sushi.

  10. With dozens of locations throughout Chicagoland, Rosati's Pizza is your go-to spot for Italian comfort food in the wee hours. Thankfully, there’s more to the menu than just thin crust and deep dish pies—but most still involve marinara sauce and oozing melted cheese. Fill up with a giant cheese calzone with your choice of meat and vegetable fillings, fettuccine alfredo pasta, or a chicken parmigiana sandwich. If you're craving some sugar, try the zeppole dessert, consisting of fried dough doused in powdered sugar that’s served with Nutella dipping sauce.

The signature pies here are crafted using original recipes to ensure perfect cheese pulls every time. You can practically taste the tradition of authentic Italian flavors in every bite. Fueled by the idea that food brings people together and sparks conversation, Rosati's offers a selection of traditional deep-dish pizza, pasta, and sandwiches to satisfy every craving.
