Gladiator (2000)

Ridley Scott's Gladiator, widely regarded as one of the best gladiator films ever made, introduced the genre to a broader audience. The picture, which is full of murder, vengeance, and superb performances by Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, is still a favorite among action and historical drama enthusiasts today.

The Gladiator's action sequences were perfected by director Scott and cinematographer John Mathieson, who used a unique manipulation of frame rates to create a stop-motion effect. Every battle scenario, including the gladiator training scenes, became grittier and more realistic as a result.
