Harakiri (1962)
Masaki Kobayashi's 1962 action-drama tells the story of a samurai who requests to commit seppuku, a manner of suicide historically considered honorable among the Japanese. Kobayashi criticizes this approach by weaving a story of corruption, hypocrisy, and poverty into a moving picture that depicts the protagonist's tribulations.
Harakiri's slow pace and thought-provoking conversation provide dimension to the film's most intense and brutal sequences. It deals with deeper themes of false honor and entrenched power, highlighted by gruesome depictions of seppuku and vicious samurais who are quick to harm anyone they feel unworthy.
