Harriet Harman

Harriet Ruth Harman (born 30 July 1950) is a British politician and lawyer who has been a member of Parliament for Camberwell and Peckham (formerly Peckham) since 1982. A member of the Labor Party, she worked in various offices. And the location of the shadow cabinet.


Born in London to a doctor and a lawyer, Harman received private tutoring at St Paul's School for Girls and then continued to study political science at York University. After working at the Brent Law Center, she became a member of the National Civil Liberties Commission, where she was convicted of contempt in a lawsuit brought by former Attorney General Michael Havers. She successfully brought Harman v. England to the European Court of Human Rights, where Havers found her right to freedom of expression violated.


Harman was elected Peckham MP in the 1982 by-election. She became Deputy Minister of Social Welfare in 1984 and Deputy Minister of Health in 1987. Under John Smith, she served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, and under Tony Blair, Assistant Secretary of Employment, Assistant Secretary of Health, and Assistant Secretary of Welfare. each. After winning the 1997 general election, she was appointed Minister of Social Welfare and the first woman minister until she left the cabinet in 1998. In 2001 she was appointed Minister of Justice for England and Wales, where she served until becoming Secretary of State in 2005. She ran for Vice President in 2007, beating five other candidates and eventually defeated Health Secretary Alan Johnson by a narrow margin. Gordon Brown, who was elected as the party leader, was not appointed deputy prime minister, but nominated her as the House of Representatives Minority Leader, Media Adviser, Minister for Women's Equality and Labor Party Chairman.


After losing the 2010 general election, Brown resigned as party leader and Labor deputy leader Harman served as interim Labor and opposition leader until Ed Miliband was elected leader. She then served as Deputy Prime Minister of Shadows from 2010 to 2011, combining this position with Minister of Shadows for International Development from 2010 to 2011 and Minister of Shadows for Culture, Media and Sports from 2011 to 2015. Harman expressed regret after it was revealed in 2014 that pedophile information sharing had an affiliation with NCCL while he was a lawyer.
