Michael Gove
Michael Andrew Gove is a British politician, journalist, and writer who has served since 2021 as Minister for Housing and Community Upgrade and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations. He has served as the MP for Surrey Heath County since 2005. A Conservative party, Gove has held various cabinet positions under Prime Minister David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson. He ran twice to become Conservative party leader in 2016 and 2019, finishing in third place both times.
Gove was born in Aberdeen and raised in foster care until adoption at the age of 4 months, after which he grew up in the city's Kitty Luster area. He attended Robert Gordon Independent College and studied English at Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford. He then began his career as a journalist for the Press and Journal, before that he was a senior writer for the Times. Elected in Surrey Heath County in the 2005 general election, he was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet by David Cameron in 2007 as Assistant Secretary for Children, Schools and Family Affairs. Appointed Minister of Education in the Cameron-Clegg Coalition, Gove ended the former Labor government's Building Schools for the Future program, changed ALevel and GCSE qualifications for final exams, and responded to the Trojan Horse scandal. The National Association of School Principals, the Association of Teachers and Instructors, the National Federation of Teachers and the NASUWT expressed distrust of his policy at a 2013 meeting. In 2014, during the cabinet reshuffle, he was promoted to Chief of Staff. After the 2015 general election and a majority in Cameron's government, Gove was appointed Secretary of State and Prime Minister. Co-author of Voting Authorization, Gove, along with fellow Conservative MP Boris Johnson, was considered one of the most prominent figures in the 2016 EU member state referendum. He was Johnson's campaign manager in the 2016 Conservative leadership election, but withdrew support that morning when Johnson announced and was due to announce his candidacy, finishing third behind Theresa May and Andrea Leeds.
Gove was removed from the Cabinet after May by Prime Minister, but was appointed to a second government in May as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs after the 2017 general election. In 2019, he ran for a second Conservative leadership, but finished third behind Johnson Hunt and Jeremy Hunt. After Johnson was appointed prime minister, Gove was appointed prime minister of the Principality of Lancaster, preparing to leave the EU. He assumed the role of additional minister in the cabinet in the 2020 cabinet reshuffle. Following a cabinet reshuffle in 2021, he was promoted to Minister of Upgrades, Housing and Utilities and Minister of Intergovernmental Finance.
