How do you stay alert and attentive during a shift?
There might be a lot of downtime when working as a security guard. A potential employer wants to know that you can be trusted and that you will be vigilant and aware of your surroundings throughout this time. Certain security jobs may include working long hours during late shifts. Companies want to know that you have techniques in place to stay awake and aware while performing your duties.
When you prepare your response, consider how you generally enhance your energy and attention, such as by drinking coffee or moving about. The last thing they need is a security guard who is sleeping or watching movies and so misses an occurrence. You want to exhibit your capacity to remain attentive and observant even during calm intervals.
Example answer: I realize how tough it may be to maintain concentration for extended periods of time when there is little going on. To stay attentive, I try to develop a pattern that allows me to be involved and watchful at all times. This might range from adding extra property checks or extra contact with other staff members or supervisors to basic things like ensuring I stretch, go for a walk, or perform some sort of physical activity every hour to keep myself aware and energised.
I am a big coffee drinker, therefore I always brewed a couple cups before each shift at my prior employment. When I'm fatigued, I perform jumping jacks or stretches to get my blood flowing. I find that short spurts of activity help me stay awake and engaged. I've also discovered that deep breathing exercises revitalize me.
