What precautions do you take to ensure your own personal safety?
A security guard job can be an extremely dangerous one, and knowing how to keep yourself safe is essential. In this question, the interviewer wants to see that you are well prepared, safety-conscious, and will not act recklessly. It is important to demonstrate that you understand the risks involved in this line of work and the ways to mitigate them. Although the main duty and purpose of security guards is to safeguard workplace security as well as people's safety, guards must also arm themselves with defenses and particular job skills to avoid being attacked and take needless risks to ensure their own safety.
When employers inquire about how you secure your own safety while executing activities and occupations, provide abilities that persuade them that you are well equipped to safeguard your own safety and instill trust, confidence, and peace of mind in them.
Example answer: I take safety very seriously. Before each shift, I check to make sure I have all the appropriate personal protective equipment and that it is in good working order. I perform regular risk assessments throughout my shift and always have an escape plan should I be faced with an extremely dangerous situation. I treat everyone I come across with respect and do not do anything to provoke or antagonize. I have practiced de-escalation techniques. I also look after my own physical and mental wellbeing to ensure that I always have a clear mind while on shift.
Finally, I am constantly observant, take notes of any hazards, and do what I can to mitigate them. In risky situations, in my opinion, security guards must employ and integrate all of their talents, from risk assessment to defense, to ensure their own safety.
