Introduction to Sociology
Why is it important to understand society? Humans are fundamentally social creatures. There is no such thing as a human being outside of society, and normal development of individuals is dependent on being socialized into a family, culture, and society. To better understand yourselves and others, you must first understand how social groups, organizations, and social institutions shape who and what you are. Sociology has developed a number of concepts, theories, and methods to assist you in comprehending the nature of social life.
This introductory course is designed to give students an overview of Sociology as a discipline. It lays the groundwork for students to apply various theoretical perspectives to contemporary social problems, particularly those related to the workplace.
Students will be able to develop an understanding of basic sociological principles, theories, and concepts, with an emphasis on diverse cultures, increase his/her understanding of self through the study of diverse human groups that affect or are affected by the student, and critically analyze a culture, sub-culture, or group to determine sociological factors that distinguish the organization at the end of the course.
