Social Norms, Social Change II
This is the second course in the Social Norms, Social Change series. In this course, you will look at social change, the tools you can use to effect change, and put what you learned in Part 1 into practice.
This course examines scripts and schemas, the cognitive structures in which social expectations are embedded, as well as their relationship to social norms. The course then delves into the fundamentals of norm abandonment, such as the relationships between personal beliefs and social expectations. You will also assess existing intervention strategies, such as legal reforms, information campaigns, economic incentives, and group discussions. Finally, you examine a variety of tools that policymakers can use to effect change, highlight the role of trendsetters in social change, and investigate the conditions under which they can be successful. The course is a collaborative effort between Penn and UNICEF.
