Islamic University in Uganda
The Islamic University of Uganda (IUIU) is a multi-campus university that offers certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs. The university's main campus is in Mbale, Uganda, about 222 kilometers (138 miles) northeast of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.
The idea for IUIU emerged during the second summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference in 1974. The university opened its doors in February 1988 with 80 students. The university's main goal is to meet the higher education needs of the English-speaking Muslim community in Southern and Eastern Africa. Non-Muslim students are also admitted to the university and are free to practice their respective religions.
IUIU had four campuses as of December 2014:
- The Main Campus is located on the Mbale-Soroti road, about 2 kilometers (1 mile) north of Mbale's central business district in Uganda's Eastern Region. The main campus is located at 1°06'02.0"N, 34°10'25.0"E. (Latitude:1.100556; Longitude:34.173611).
- The Kampala Campus is located on Kibuli Hill, approximately 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) south-east of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.
- The Kabojja Campus is located in Kabojja, which is located 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of Kampala's central business district. This campus is only for female students.
- The Arua Campus is located in the town of Arua, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) north-west of Kampala.
