Javier's Gourmet Mexicano
Javier focuses on a more genuine portrayal of what Mexico City dining is all about, moving away from the Tex-Mex paradigm of tacos and enchiladas. Mounted game, big paintings, and hanging plants adorn Javier's dimly lit dining area. You will be disappointed if you come to Javier's expecting a classic Texas Mexican restaurant, but if you want a taste of Mexico's heart, you've arrived at the correct spot!
Since 1977, this perennially popular Dallas institution has served a flavor of modern Mexico City, which means you won't find any Tex-Mex here. Instead, meals like cabrito fajitas, Mayan-style slow-roasted pork, and ancho chile marinated charbroiled quail are the actual stars of the kitchen. Start with grilled cheese and chorizo panela, which is cooked at the table, and conclude with cajeta crepes. If cigars are your thing, stay after dinner and visit Javier's ultra-chic cigar bar. Expect to run across a few A-list celebs while you're there.
