Jamia Millia Islamia is a public university founded in 1920. The University Grants Commission recognizes the university (UGC). The varsity contains nine faculties of study, 38 teaching and research departments, and 27 learning and research centers. JMI Delhi achieved NAAC accreditation with a grade of 'A++' in 2015. In 2021, JMI was ranked 10th in the architecture category, 33rd in the engineering category, 7th in the law category, 36th in the management category, 30th in the research category, 20th in the dental category, 6th in the university category, and 13th in the overall category by the Government of India's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

The institution has one of the largest campuses in India, located in the center of the capital city of New Delhi.
