Kureyon Shin Chan/Crayon Shin Chan
He is the protagonist and the son of Hiroshi and Misae. He is Himawari's brother, a kindergarten-aged boy whose antics serve as the basis for the series. His nickname is "Shin-chan" Nohara. He frequently performs a running gag in which he pulls down his pants to reveal his buttocks and dances to an accompanying original song (known as "Ass dance" in the Funimation English dub). Shin-chan is his relatives' affectionate nickname for him. He is five years old and enjoys "Chocobi" chocolate biscuits and the TV superhero "Action Mask," but he despises green peppers (acute lachanophobia). Himawari, his sister, is always in his thoughts.
More of his genes came from his mother than from his father. In contrast to his father, who only enjoys watching and flirting with attractive young women, his mother is lethargic, loves to eat and sleep, is stingy, stubborn, imaginative, and cannot resist good things. Although Shin-signature chan's thick eyebrows appear to be a pattern from his father's side, both he and his sister have an appearance that is more reminiscent of their mother.
He is an enthusiastic singer as well as a competent baseball and football player. His aunt Musae taught him photography. He sometimes changes the actual words, which makes it very funny. For example, a promise can become a promotion, and so on. He frequently expresses deep affection for his best friend, Kazama. Dressing up is one of his unusual activities (often as an animal). He also causes problems for others before criticizing their efforts to cover for him. In general, he is outspoken and inquisitive.
He hardly feels any shame. He is frequently depicted doing drag or donning animal costumes in both manga and anime. His antics have on numerous occasions helped those around him find solutions to their issues. He also has an unexpectedly high level of skill when it comes to changing the wording of the songs he sings. He occasionally demonstrates acts of selfless kindness. For instance, in one anime episode, he risked getting wet and dirty by saving a frog from a truck on a rainy day while wearing his last set of clean clothes, earning Misae's wrath in the process. He gives Masao the change he has in another episode despite knowing that his mother will chastise him later. A running gag in the series involves Shin-chan being late for the bus to his school, usually due to spending too much time in the bathroom, forcing Misae to reluctantly ride his bike to school. Despite the fact that he constantly teases his mother, he is very close to her.
Shin-chan also demonstrates maturity beyond his usual self in his concern for others, and in a few rare instances he demonstrates that deep down he truly cares for his family, regardless of how much distress he may occasionally cause them. He also serves in the Kasukabe Defense Force.
