Kyoto University
Kyoto University was established in 1897. It is the second oldest institution in Japan and one of the erstwhile Imperial Universities. Kyoto University has around 22,000 students, ten faculties, eighteen graduate schools, thirteen research institutes, and twenty-one research and teaching centers. It has a regular high ranking in Asia.
Kyoto University portrays itself as an academic school that fosters a "freedom spirit." Among its teachers and graduates are eleven Nobel Laureates and two Fields Medalists. The university is widely regarded as the birthplace of the philosophical movement known as the Kyoto School.
Kyoto University has three campuses: Yoshida, Uji, and Katsura. The Kyoto University Library is Japan's second-largest academic library, with about 7 million volumes.
