Tokyo Institute of Technology
The Tokyo Institute of Technology is a national research institution in the Greater Tokyo area. Established in 1881, it is the country's largest higher education school specializing in science and technology. The institution is divided into six schools, each having more than 40 departments and research areas. Especially, the Tokyo Institute of Technology produced a Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry Hideki Shirakawa Ph.D.
The Tokyo Institute of Technology Library in Ookayama is the major library. It is the largest science and technology library in Japan, founded in 1882. It now holds 674,000 volumes and 2,500 publications, including 1,600 foreign academic journals; it has the most international research collections in Japan. Every year, it distributes approximately 7,000 registered electronic journals. As a result, the library has been designated as a 'Centre of Foreign Journals' by the Japanese government for its remarkable national and worldwide significance.
