Lake Ağgöl

Lake Ağgöl is the second largest lake in Azerbaijan located in the west of Sarysu lake in Ağgöl National Park. Connected by a small channel with a slightly bigger brother, soft drinks provide a suitable environment for some migrant birds. The forests and wetlands surrounding the clear blue water create a very beautiful scene. Wetlands are located here, where water birds live, are included in the Ramsar Convention list, and are considered a world-meaningful reserve.


Lake Ağgöl is the second largest lake in Azerbaijan and is also known as one of the best lakes to visit in Azerbaijan. It has an area of 56.2 square kilometers. It is a shallow endogenous lake with a maximum depth of 2.5 m. It is also located in the lowland of Kur-Araz and extends from Imishli Rayon to Agjabadi Rayon. Lake Ağgöl is provided by groundwater from rivers like Araz, and Ajinohur. Lake and surrounding areas are home to many wildlife. Ağgöl National Park protects the lake's wetland living environment. Many species of migrant birds including a number of threatened species visit this lake. It is believed that this lake was formed due to a major earthquake in 1139. Lake Ağgöl is considered an important habitat in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. Located in the Ağgöl National Park, it is a part of the wetland system, which is a secure location for migrating birds.
