Lake Goygol

Lake Goygol, or "Blue Lake", is located around snowy mountains at 1,556 meters above sea level in the western Ganja district of Azerbaijan. It is said to be one of the most beautiful natural sites in the Caspian country, as well as one of the best lakes to visit in Azerbaijan. The lake was born after a strong earthquake ravaged Mount Kapaz blocking the Aghsu river with huge pieces of rock from the mountain. The name Goygol comes from the color of water, which changes continuously from green to blue and vice versa. About 350,000 tourists came to see this natural wonder in 2017. Swimming, boating, fishing and camping are prohibited in lake Goygol due to strict government protection. In particular, a special bus service in the lake territory offers an excursion to the surrounding hills and woods.

Lake Goygol is the most beautiful lake in Azerbaijan and a popular day excursion from Ganja. The mountain peaks and dense forests hug the water's edge giving it a truly luxurious beauty. Many types of fish live in the lake, which was formed after an earthquake that changed the geology of the area in the 12th century. Due to the current conflict with Armenia and lake Goygol near the border, only certain areas are protected. Every year thousands of tourists visit this fascinating lake. Goygol National Park, another tourist attraction in Azerbaijan boasts rich wildlife and aquatic life.
