Lake Ilopango

An explosion of undersea volcanoes created Lake Ilopango, which is situated in the heart of southern El Salvador and on the boundary of the departments of San Salvador, La Paz, and Cuscatlán. The lake was then encircled by smaller and medium-sized volcanoes. The Ilopango crater is prominent in the photograph. The second largest lake in the nation and a favorite place for sci-fi residents and tourists wanting to spot multi-layered UFOs, magnificent crater lake is located inside a gorgeous crater. Even if you don't see extraterrestrials, travelers agree that it's a place well worth the journey — even if they have to manage the local transportation system to get here.

Swim in the crater lake to cool down or climb to the top of the neighboring lighthouse for magnificent views of El Salvador's famed breathtaking landscape. Small cafes with a bold wildness and sumptuous cuisine with a Mediterranean character will be found along the shore. Travelers passing through this area will see street painters depicting lovely landscapes; if you inquire, the artist will also accept portrait commissions. El Salvador's weather and seasons should be checked by tourists before traveling there because the region floods during the rainy season. The months of May through December are the most ideal.
