Lamu

Lamu is the country's oldest surviving town, located on Lamu Island off Africa's coast. The town itself has narrow streets that are only wide enough for donkeys and people to pass through. The dhow is the primary mode of transportation in the waters surrounding the island, and the lack of fast transportation lends an incredibly relaxed atmosphere to the entire town. The beach is still largely unpopulated by people and tourists in general, making it an ideal place to relax.

The structures are in excellent condition, and some date back to the late 14th century. The proximity of the buildings creates an intimate atmosphere, the streets are cool and quiet, and the older parts of the buildings offer an interesting change in texture.

There are also many places to visit in town. The Lamu Museum, located on the island's waterfront, gives visitors an overview of the island's history and culture. The Swahili House Museum is a beautifully restored traditional Swahili house that provides a genuine insight into the culture for those interested in Swahili culture. Lamu Fort is a massive structure with a colorful and educational walk-through display of the local environment and natural history that is ideal for children.

The island's library is located here, and there are many interesting books that can be found and read at your leisure. Dhow trips, which include fishing and snorkeling and allow you to relax at a barbecue lunch on Manda Beach, are more active activities to participate in.
