Loch Morar

Freshwater loch Loch Morar is located in Lochaber, Highland, Scotland. With a surface size of 26.7 km2, it is the fifth-largest loch in Scotland and is the deepest freshwater body in the British Isles, with a maximum depth of 310 m. The loch, whose surface height is 9 meters above sea level, was formed by glacial activity about 10,000 years ago. It divides Arisaig and Moidart from the historical North Morar neighborhood.

A variety of natural woodland, open hillside, grassland for sheep and cattle, and planted mixed coniferous and broadleaf woodlands surround the loch. Plants can only colonize about 0.7% of the loch's surface. Loch Morar, the fifth largest loch in Scotland by surface area and the deepest lake in the UK, certainly lives up to its reputation as one of the most dramatic lakes in the country. Otters on the water, salmon migrating upstream, and sea eagles flying overhead add to the magnificent ambiance created by the rolling hills that surround Morar. Fortunately, the loch is said to be home to a monster as well. Her nickname among the locals is Morag.
