Locust Projects
Locust Projects, founded in 1998 by artists for artists, is Miami's longest-running nonprofit alternative art venue. Through commissioned exhibits and initiatives, artist residencies, summer art intensives for adolescents, and public events on contemporary art and curatorial practice, they develop, present, and promote ambitious and adventurous new work and the interchange of ideas. Locust Projects, a prominent incubator of innovative art and ideas, values boundary-pushing creative initiatives, risk-taking, and experimentation by local, national, and worldwide artists. They help the arts community in South Florida by offering project grants to artists and empowering creative careers by assisting with the administrative duties of being an artist through an onsite artist resource hub and providing access to pro bono legal services.
Born in a Miami warehouse back when Wynwood was in its infant stages, Locust Projects has morphed into a pillar of the art community. Today, it is recognized as a not-for-profit institute where visual artists are invited to reach beyond the limits and create art that evokes the spirit of freedom. The space’s educational initiatives and programming are free to the public, and the site-specific installations are worth the trip. The annual Smash and Grab fundraiser is also a must. This is one of the best art galleries in Miami.
