Marcus M. Sixta
Markus M. Sixta is a family attorney, mediator, and former social worker. He is the founder of Crossroads Law, a family-owned law firm based in British Columbia. He is also the founder of Coach My Case, a pioneering legal services firm that seeks to improve access to justice by providing remote legal trainers and paralegals for those who cannot afford traditional legal services and must defend themselves in court. Prior to the pandemic, Crossroads Law was featured in The Globe and Mail and Canadian Lawyer Magazine about innovative ways of working that included open offices and employees that could work from home. This approach, along with its promise of paperless use, allowed the Crossroads Act to not only survive but thrive during the pandemic.
Marcus launched Coach My Case in the spring of 2021 after years of watching self-proclaimed litigants struggle in the justice system. According to a report from the Department of Justice, in some provinces, up to 70% of all cases have at least one person representing them. This can have adverse consequences for individuals and place a significant strain on the judicial system.
Markus believes that access to justice can be improved through an alternative, client-centric model of providing legal services.
The Coach My Case allows self-identifying individuals to access legal assistance remotely across British Columbia. Or Albert. They can choose from paralegals or lawyers depending on their needs and budget, and they provide assistance in the background to better represent themselves in court. Services are available upon request and may include drafting, litigation and mediation, and investigation. Additionally, Coach My Case charges no fees, so fees and bills are low.
Marcus is also the public voice for access to justice in Canada. He has written articles for numerous publications and has appeared in many news reports related to judicial access, including CBC and Global News.
The driving force behind all his work is Marcus's passion for giving back to society. He is a member of the Canadian BC Bar Association. Presentation on legal coaching topics for the Segmented Legal Services Commission and Bar Association of Canada. He is also a senior attorney at Pro Bono Students Canada, a member of the Alberta Law Society's Family Law Practice Guidelines, and a board member of A Better City Vancouver.
