Maybelline
A worldwide American firm with headquarters in New York City, Maybelline New York trading as Maybelline manufactures cosmetics, skincare products, fragrances, and personal care items. It was established in Chicago in 1914, and since 1996, it has been a division of French cosmetics giant L'Oréal. Thomas Lyle Williams, a chemist, established The Maybelline Company in Chicago in 1915. About how the brand was first created, Williams observed his older sister Mabel giving her eyelashes a darker, fuller appearance by coating them with a Vaseline and coal dust mixture. He modified it using a chemistry set to create a regionally popular product named Lash-Brow-Ine.
Williams gave her the new name Maybelline for his eye makeup product. The business created the first mass-market automatic, Ultra Lash, in the 1960s, and Maybelline Cake Mascara, "the first contemporary eye cosmetic for everyday use", in 1917. "Maybelline Ooh La La" was the company's advertising slogan introduced in 1981. It was used up until 1991, when it was replaced by "Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline". According to CBS Outdoor, the tagline is among the 150 years' most memorable straplines.
