Meteora
Meteora is an architectural complex of monasteries built on a rocky peak in the northwest of Thessaly, Greece. It is not simply a beautiful architectural work, but it can be said to be unique in Greece as well as in the world.
Meteora in Greek means hanging in the air, and true to that meaning, the Meteora architectural complex is perched on top of the mountain. If you look down from the above, you will see these monasteries as if hanging in the air. Besides, these monasteries are also the most important monastic buildings in Greece after Mount Athos. Meteora consists of 6 large and small monasteries, all built on the top of Mount Thessaly near the Peneios River and the Pindus Mountains. Today, there are only six intact monasteries out of 24 in the complex. The monks also built stairs to climb the mountain instead of climbing the dangerous rope ladder before. The architectural complex of Meteora Monastery soon became the architectural model of Greece. But it was not until this place was recognized as a World Cultural Heritage that it was widely known and became a tourist attraction in Greece.
