Middle East Technical University
First in this of the best universities in Turkey is Middle East Technical University (METU). It was founded in 1956 and specializes in natural and social sciences. Architecture was the university's first academic program, and it today provides 43 undergraduate, 107 postgraduate, and 69 Ph.D. programs to about 30,000 students.
METU is divided into five faculties: Architecture, Engineering, Administrative Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education, and Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Informatics, Applied Mathematics, and Marine Sciences.
METU began in two tiny buildings and subsequently expanded in size. It moved to its current location in Ankara in 1963, becoming the country's first university campus. METU is now a globally focused institution, with more income from international research projects than any other Turkish university, and partnerships with important worldwide organizations such as NASA, NATO, the United Nations, the World Bank, and Erasmus.
All degree programs at METU are taught in English, and the university is home to over 1,700 international students from nearly 100 countries. It established the first international campus of a Turkish university in Northern Cyprus in 2003.
METU's main campus in Ankara is set on 11,000 acres of ground that has been created to look like a forest, replete with a lake – Lake Eymir – that serves as a focal point for students' recreational activities. META's Graduate School of Marine Sciences is located on its Erdemli campus, which is located on the Mediterranean coast.
METU also has Turkey's first science and research development park. The park, known as METU Technopolis and located on the university's main campus, aspires to serve as a hub for high-tech start-ups.
