  7. Ege University was the first university in Izmir, Turkey's third-largest city and a historic settlement known as Smyrna for much of its history. The university was established in 1955. By 1982, it had expanded to the point that, as is customary in the Turkish educational system, the government chose to split it in two, establishing Dokuz Eylul University.

The divide reduced Ege University from 17 to 7 faculties, however, it has since grown back to about the same size, with the construction of the Birgivi Faculty of Islamic Studies in 2018 bringing it back to 17 faculties.

The university's goal is to be "the first choice of those who wish to carry the pride and distinction of being Aegean, those who wish to combine the knowledge that modern ages require in life and become open individuals who are open to all social, cultural, and scientific innovation," as it describes itself as "a pioneering representative of the Fourth Generation University concept."

Its 370-hectare Borsova site has been dubbed "a campus city of 80,000 people," and it also has satellite campuses in Cesme, Bayinder, Bergama, Odemis, Tire, and Urla.

    Ege University
frequently emphasizes its teaching and research in medicine and related fields. The nursing faculty was the first in Turkey, and it was also the first to admit males.
