Mindelo

Mindelo has a reputation for being a melting pot of cultural influences. Mindelo lies on the island of Sao Vicente, and due to a fall in the economy and port over the previous decade, the city currently houses a large number of individuals who live in slum-like circumstances.

Despite these conditions, the island retains its status as Cape Verde's cultural center and is a must-see for visitors seeking a taste of the country's vibrant nightlife. The local music clubs and pubs will keep you occupied till the wee hours of the morning. The town's fish market and waterfront are worth visiting throughout the day.

At Mindelo, the New Year is celebrated in two prominent locations in the city center: the main street, Rua de Lisboa, and the boulevard along the Avenida Marginal. People congregate on the boulevard to watch the fireworks. A tiny group continues the custom of jumping into the sea around 12 a.m. Although beaches aren't the main reason people visit the island of So Vicente, it does have a few stunning beaches worth seeing.
