Mount Hoverla
Mount Hoverla, part of the Carpathian Mountain ranges, is Ukraine's highest point, rising to 6,762 feet above sea level. Mount Hoverla is a sandstone mountain with a snow-capped summit. Beech and spruce forests cover the slopes, above which a belt of sub-alpine meadows can be found. Although the first ascent of the mountain is unknown, the first documented tourist ascent occurred in 1880, and the mountain has since attracted a large number of visitors.
The mountain became popular as an extreme sports destination in the twentieth century, with some routes classified as 1A in the winter under the former Soviet Union's (USSR) grading system. Several deaths have been reported recently as a result of inexperienced extreme lovers attempting to climb the mountain in the winter. It has become a tradition for every Ukrainian to climb this mountain at least once in their lives.
