Mount of Temptation Monastery
The Monastery of Temptation is a Greek Orthodox monastery located in Jericho, Palestine. It is built on the slopes of Mount Temptation 350 meters above sea level, perched along a cliff overlooking Jericho and the Jordan Valley. Its oldest structures date from the 6th century C.E., Crusaders then built two churches: one in a cave halfway up the cliff and the second on the summit of the mount. In 1895, built above the cave traditionally believed to be where Jesus spent forty days and forty nights fasting.
The Monastery of Temptation is traditionally considered the site where Christ was tempted by the devil. Mount Quarantania, or Jabal Quruntal in Arabic, is another name for the area. Both names arise from the Latin word quarantine meaning 40. There are two ways to get to the Monastery, either by taking a cable car ride up or by climbing up the bare, rocky slopes of Jabal Quruntal to the Monastery, which takes only 15-30 minutes. Mount of Temptation Monastery is the fourth most beautiful of the most beautiful historical sites in Palestine.
