The Church of St. Catherine
Catherine's Church or Saint Catherine's Chapel is a religious structure affiliated with the Catholic Church and located adjacent to the northern part of the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem on the West Bank of Palestine. It functions as a parish church and Franciscan convent. There is a cave complex below the church.
Administered by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, according to the Roman Rite, and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2012 as part of "Jesus' Birthplace: Church of the Nativity and Pilgrimage route in Bethlehem".
In each different period, the church has a different structure. During the Byzantine period, St Jerome's monastery may have been on the site of a medieval monastery, its foundations hidden under the current pavement laid by Barluzzi. Or after World War II it was modernized several times according to the liturgical trends adopted after the Second Vatican Council. The Crusader-era monastery was restored in 1948 by the Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi.
Location: West Bank, Palestinian territories.
