Mr. Sunshine is the sixth highest-rated drama in Korean cable television history, with the final episode receiving 18.129 percent and an average rating of 12.955 percent, the second-highest average rating ever recorded for cable television. It was praised for its cinematography and storytelling, but it was also chastised for its inaccurate portrayal of historical facts, with some accusing it of being "pro-Japanese."
The film is about a Korean boy who hid aboard an American warship and traveled to America during the U.S. expedition to Korea in 1871. As an adult, he returns to his homeland as an American soldier stationed in his own country, amid the collapse of the Korean monarchy. He meets and falls in love with the daughter of a nobleman.
