Namibia
Namibian diamond mining began more than a century ago, in 1908, and the country is now one of the world's leading diamond producers. Every year, Namibia produces 1,900,000 carats of diamonds.
Diamonds are being mined in water over 140 meters deep off the coast of Namibia's exclusive economic zone. As a result of these activities, Namibia is now the world's top underwater miner. These resources generate high-quality diamonds. They were worn from their source rock in Africa's interior, washed down rivers, deposited in the Atlantic Ocean, and then carried along the African coast by waves and longshore currents. Namdeb Diamond Corporation, a partnership owned in equal parts by the Government of Namibia and the De Beers Group of Companies, presently conducts the majority of diamond mining in Namibia.
